The England international has been consistently brilliant.
Manchester United ace Wayne Rooney may have a number of critics both inside and outside the football world, but there is no doubting the forward is a tremendous talent.
By the time the current season finishes the 28-year-old will have been at Old Trafford for a decade after bursting onto the scene as a brilliant teenager at Everton.
Some questioned Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to pay £25.6m for an 18-year-old back in 2004, but the Scot has been proved right once again nearly 10 years on.
In a 26-and-a-half year career in charge of the Red Devils, no player scored more goals under Ferguson than Rooney, with the England international having 205 strikes to date.
This total has come in 410 matches – meaning the striker’s rate is almost one goal every other game – and as well as that the attacker is also an important team player with 117 assists in all competitions.
It’s this side of the game that makes Rooney such a great asset for United, as shown by the four goals the Englishman laid on in the side’s 0-5 drubbing of Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Wednesday.
As good a goal-scorer as Robin Van Persie is, the Dutchman does not possess the same talent as the 30-year-old’s strike partner for dropping into the hole and influencing the play.
It’s easy to see why Rooney is not perhaps as popular as some of the other Premier League greats, with spates of sulking over contract issues and transfer requests.
The player also doesn’t come across in the public eye as a charismatic figure, although many team-mates insist that is not the case in private.
However, as a footballer there is no doubting the talent that Rooney possesses and to show such consistency at a top club like United is no mean feat – perhaps one day the forward will be recognised as one of the true legends of the game.
