The on-loan Belgian is being backed to lead the Toffees’ goalscoring charts.
Roberto Martinez says on-loan striker Romelu Lukaku is the man to fire in the goals for Everton this season.
The Toffees have failed to score in the last two Premier League matches – consecutive goalless draws with West Brom and Cardiff – while teenager Gerard Deulofeu is the only forward player to find the net in their four games in all competitions.
Martinez has attempted to add more firepower to the Goodison Park attack this summer, signing Deulofeu on a temporary deal from Barcelona and raiding former club Wigan for Ivory Coast international Aroune Kone.
But it’s Lukaku, borrowed from Chelsea, who the Spaniard feels will provide that extra cutting edge in attack and breathe new life into Everton’s campaign after he scored an impressive 17 goals in 35 appearances for West Brom last season.
“I think it’s fair to say that our opening three performances in the league have been really, really good, but all they have been lacking is that goal – the ball hitting the back of the net,” Martinez told the Liverpool Echo.
“The fans realise that and when you see a player arrive who is capable of doing that it excites you.
“He could be that little piece which completes the puzzle.
“We are all excited about Romelu, without forgetting that Nikica Jelavic and Arouna Kone are very important for us too, but extra competition for places is also important.”
