Ronaldo set to be handed monstrous £12.65m-per-year contract after tax…
Real Madrid’s legendary Portuguese wing-forward Cristiano Ronaldo is set to sign a new contract that will make him the world’s highest paid player, reports the Times.
The 29-year-old has scored 202 goals in 202 matches for Los Blancos, and is all set to be offered an improved deal worth £12.65m-per-year after tax. He currently earns £8.85m-per-year after tax, but his astronomical new contract is 90% confirmed.
Samuel Eto’o was previously the world’s highest paid player at Anzhi Makhachkala, but the Cameroonian striker has agreed a pay-cut to join Premier League outfit Chelsea this season, meaning Ronaldo will reclaim the crown when he finalises terms on the new deal.
The new contract reminds everyone of the Portuguese’s achievements in La Liga since his £80m move in 2009 from Manchester United. Following the world-record £85m arrival of Gareth Bale this summer, some of the attention Ronaldo normally enjoys has diminished – but this new contract shows the player and fans how highly regarded he is at the Bernabeu.
Bale and Ronaldo, the two most expensive players of all time – will also be two of the highest earning players in the world when they line up alongside each other this season. Whether they can wrestle the La Liga title off a Lionel Messi inspired Barcelona side remains to be seen however.
