Manchester United will have to brace themselves for another Wayne Rooney transfer saga next summer, with Real Madrid earmarking the forward as a priority target, reports the Sun.
It had been widely expected that the Spanish giants would target Liverpool forward Luis Suarez, who publicly tried to leave the club this summer before the season started. However, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers flatly refused to sell his star striker, who has gone on to score 19 goals in 12 matches, and has now been rewarded with an enormous contract extension.
Rooney though only has 18 months left on his deal, and Real Madrid will hope they can secure him in the summer for around £20m, when the forward will only have one year left on his contract.
Madrid sold Gonzalo Higuain in the summer, and have only Karim Benzema in their squad as an established centre-forward option. Although the Frenchman has bagged ten goals in all competitions this season, Madrid chairman Florentino Perez has long been an admirer of the 28-year-old English forward.
Rooney was publicly disgruntled with the way he was treated both under Sir Alex Ferguson last season, and under David Moyes in the summer, and could jump at the chance to move to a fellow European heavyweight.
