The Champions League quarter-finals got underway on Tuesday and now Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund go head-to-head in their first-leg.
The match at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu will be a repeat of last season’s semi-finals, when Dortmund beat Los Blancos 4-3 over two legs to progress to the final – eventually losing to Bayern Munich.
That same result isn’t expected this time around however, with Madrid having looked strong in this competition so far, progressing from the group stages with the joint most points – alongside city rivals Atletico Madrid – and then brushing aside Schalke 04 in the last-16 9-2 on aggregate.
Jurgen Klopp’s men meanwhile have lost Mario Goetze since last year and have been well off the pace in the Bundesliga; with Bayern having already won the title with a record seven games to spare.
For Los Merengues left-back Marcelo is out and whilst there were rumours Gareth Bale would replace the Brazilian at the back, head coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed it will be Fabio Coentrao instead.
As for Dortmund, top-scorer Robert Lewandowski – who scored four against Madrid in the first-leg last year – is suspended, whilst Klopp is also without Neven Subotic, Marcel Schmelzer, Sven Bender, Ilkay Gundogan and Jakub Blaszczykowski.
Pierre-Emerick Aubemayang is expected to replace Lewandowski upfront, whilst the dangerman for the hosts will of course be tournament top-scorer and Ballon d’Or holder Cristiano Ronaldo.
