Modric reveals that the duo and PSG both tried to sign him.
Real Madrid’s Luka Modric has revealed that a trio of top European clubs wanted to sign him from Tottenham.
Modric signed for Madrid in the summer of 2012, but says that PSG, Chelsea and Manchester United also tried to bag the Croatian that summer, as well as the Blues 12 months previously.
“Ancelotti wanted me. A year ago in PSG and 2011 in Chelsea,” the 28-year-old was quoted by The Daily Star.
“But then Andre Villas-Boas came and Tottenham did not want to give me up.
“I also knew of the interest of the United and even if the transfer did not materialise, the public appreciation of a great like Sir Alex is a big pride for me.”
New Madrid head-coach Carlo Ancelotti is clearly a huge fan of the midfielder and that may explain why Modric is getting more chances this season for Los Blancos.
The Croatia international was criticised during his first year at the Santiago Bernabeu, but has played every match for the side this term in La Liga and the Champions League.
“I have no doubt that the best thing that ever happened to me in football is to play in Madrid,” Modric was quoted by the Daily Mail back in early October.
“In football it is difficult to plan, but if you ask me, I would like to retire in Madrid. With titles, of course.”
The midfielder would have probably provided the creativity in the middle of the pitch that Moyes’ side is so desperately lacking currently.
Both Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas both said no to the English champions as well, whilst a last minute deal for Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera couldn’t be completed and eventually Marouane Fellaini arrived for £27.5m.
The Belgian has struggled to find any form for United and Moyes is probably wishing to have a player like Modric at the Scot’s disposal.
