The Spanish first division champions suffered a huge blow with the news that first-choice keeper and club captain Iker Casillas broke his left hand playing against Valencia at the Mestalla in the Copa del Rey quarter-final second leg on Wednesday night, and as a result is expected to be out of action for up to two months.
And, with Jose Mourinho’s men having been drawn to face Manchester United over two legs in the Champions League round of 16 in February, the Spanish giants are in desperate need of a back-up shot-stopper this month, with Cesar’s name said to be top of the ‘Special One’s’ wish list.
The Brazil international, once rated as the world’s best goalkeeper, played under Mourinho during their time together at Inter Milan, where they won the Treble in 2010, while the West Londoners themselves are believed to be keen on the idea, if only to get the 33-year-old off the club’s wage bill, with the No 1 thought to be earning in the region of £170,000 per week at a Loftus Road.
