Royals tried to re-sign Icelandic midfielder.
Reading made three deadline day bids to re-sign Tottenham midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson but could not agree a deal with Spurs, according to boss Brian McDermott.
fanatix tickets – Barclays Premier League tickets are still available for this weekend’s games.
West Brom vs Spurs tickets are on sale from £15 for this Sunday’s match at the Hawthorns.
The Royals had a club record bid of over £10m for the 23-year-old rejected but McDermott claims the Premier League strugglers we close to getting their man.
“We tried to bring him back. We had spoken to Spurs and we made three offers,” the 51-year-old said.
“I thought at one stage we had a real chance of doing a deal, but unfortunately, we couldn’t manage to do it.
“Gylfi is a Tottenham player, but we’ve known him since he was 13-years-old and it would have been great to bring him back.”
Sigurdsson left Reading to join Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim for £7.5m in 2010 but returned to the Premier League last season in a successful six-month loan spell at Swansea.
The Iceland international shone for the South Wales outfit and, despite interest from Liverpool, Spurs won the race to land Sigurdsson for £8m this summer.
But the ex-Royal has managed just six starts for the North London club and, with German international Lewis Holtby on board, Sigurdsson’s chances now look even more limited.
It is understood that if Reading stay up, they will attempt to sign Sigurdsson again next summer.
