Luis Suarez Uruguayan compatriot has leapt to the wantaway Liverpool striker’s defence…
Liverpool’s controversial striker Luis Suarez has received the backing of his international compatriot Edinson Cavani, following Suarez’s plea to leave the club, reports Sky Sports.
The Reds forward launched a scathing attack on his club last week, claiming that his manager has broken a promise allowing him to leave the club this summer. Suarez is desperate to quite Anfield and play Champions League football, but Liverpool have consistently stated that they will refuse to sell the 26-year-old to a Premier League rival.
Brendan Rodgers has demanded an apology from the Uruguayan forward for his disrespectful attitude, but Cavani believes his compatriot has done nothing wrong.
“The Liverpool coach can talk about loyalty and disrespect but maybe he needs to look up what it means,” says the £55m PSG man, who is the biggest transfer of the summer so far.
“Luis had the chance last year to join Juventus, who went on to win the league in Italy. But he chose to stay with Liverpool. That’s what you call loyalty.”
Suarez had a fantastic individual season for Liverpool last year, where no fan could question his commitment to the cause. He scored 30 times in all competitions, but still couldn’t help his side finish any higher than seventh, as they never threatened to qualify for Europe’s elite competition.
“I’ve known about his agreement with Liverpool and understood that he would be leaving if they were not playing in the Champions League,” continued Cavani, but it appears this ‘agreement’ between Suarez and Liverpool was verbal rather than contractual.
With three weeks left of the transfer window, it is looking increasingly likely that Suarez will stay at Anfield, unless a European giant comes in with an offer close to Liverpool’s £50m valuation.
