A look at the two sides before tonight’s game.
Chelsea are hopeful of welcoming back captain John Terry to the starting line-up, who has spent a significant spell on the sidelines since injuring his knee back in November.
Gary Cahill is back in action and likely to be in jubilant mood following the birth of his son on Saturday. Expect clichéd cradle celebrations if he scores.
Demba Ba and Fernando Torres are both fit, leaving interim fan favourite Rafa Benitez with the difficult choice of deciding whether he does or does not want his striker to score goals.
Southamton youngster has scraped his knee so as a precaution he’s being made to stay indoors and away from trouble.
Emmanuel Mayuka remains on his holiday to South Africa, where he’s also intending to play a bit of football for Zambia.
Jose Fonte and Adam Lallana remain “injured”.
Chelsea are continuing their efforts to have the most inconsistent season possible, winning 4-1 at one of the hardest grounds in the league when they beat Stoke last weekend. Expect cheers during the 16th minute of the game as the Stamford Bridge faithful continues with their best efforts to undermine the team and their manager. Despite that, Chelsea will feel confident having beaten Southampton 5-1 in the FA Cup earlier this month.
If only the last eleven games counted, Southampton would be just one point behind Chelsea. Unfortunately for them the League continues to insist that the results from all the games still stand. Despite beating Villa at the weekend in controversial circumstances, and generally no longer looking like a side desperate to throw away its Premier League status, Saints will be happy to come out of Stamford Bridge without having been mauled.
Watch out for any suspicious own goals, red cards, penalty-conceding tackles from Luke Shaw. The young Saints defender has been gushing on Twitter about how much he loves Chelsea.
