New rugby league season already plunged into controversy.
The NRL integrity unit and offcials from the St George Illawarra Dragons are investigating a claim that one of their players was involved in a violent assault at an Illawarra pub.
Police have confirmed an incident did occur at 10.20pm on Wednesday night with two men fighting inside the Hotel Illawarra.
The fight then allegedly spilled out onto the streets with a 26-year-old man taken to hospital for treatment on eye and cheek injuries.
The second man was also hurt but did not seek medial help, no charges have been laid in the matter.
The Dragons released a statement saying they were looking into the incident.
“The St George Illawarra Dragons have been made aware of an alleged incident involving a Dragons player in Wollongong last night and the Club is presently investigating the circumstances and has advised the NRL Integrity Unit accordingly,” the statement said.
The hotel owner declined to comment on the story but was quick to point out on their Facebook page the success of the night, posting a photo 40 minutes after the alleged fight was said to have taken place with the caption: “We told you it was going to be a big one!”
