Irving links up with LeBron for dunk: (Video) Cavs duo produce highlight play.
LeBron says this is Irving’s show: Point guard will lead offense this season.
Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving allayed fears over his ankle injury by revealing it is just a sprain and that the walking boot was precautionary.
Irving sustained the injury during practice ahead of the pre-season game against the Miami Heat in Brazil this weekend, but after x-rays and an MRI scan on Tuesday, there was no damage revealed and he is listed as day-to-day.
While it is unclear as to whether or not he will feature on Saturday, Irving was using a walking boot as he left with his team-mates to go sight-seeing around Rio de Janeiro.
However, he calmed fears over the extent of the injury by taking to Twitter: “Just a sprained ankle from practice, in a walking boot for precautionary reasons. Not that serious, I’m all good”.
It will be a worry for Cavs fans as their point guard has missed 49 games over the past three seasons due to injury, and after a stellar summer with Team USA at the FIBA World Cup in Spain, an injury at this stage could prove disruptive to his form heading into the new NBA season.
Irving scored a game-high 16 points in the first pre-season game against Maccabi Tel Aviv last weekend, and so his possible absence against the Heat will likely have an effect on the team.
LeBron James has already insisted this off-season that this is “Kyrie’s show”, with the point guard expected to lead the offense and do the majority of ball handling.
The Cavs are widely regarded as the favourites to win an NBA championship this coming season, with Irving, James and Kevin Love forming a new ‘Big Three’ while the roster is full of quality and depth after several other acquisitions this past summer.
