Chris Paul shoulder injury: CP3 eyes comeback for All-Star Game.
Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul is desperate to improve on his post-season record as he is aware of the risk that it could define his career.
Despite being considered one of the best point guards in the league and having put up impressive numbers throughout his nine-year NBA career, Paul has yet to make it past the second-round of the playoffs.
While the Clippers are considered one of the favourites for the NBA championship next season, Paul is aware that he must quickly improve on his post-season record otherwise he will run the risk of being labelled a nearly-man that was never capable of taking the final step.
“It’s the truth, it doesn’t matter if it’s fair or not,” Paul said.
“That’s a huge deal, especially to me and us as a team. This year it’s about the process. It would be nice if we could start the playoffs tomorrow but we have a lot of work to do before that. I understand last year we had a great opportunity and Game 5 [of the Western Conference semifinals] was horrible and it’s no secret why we lost Game 5 but this year gives us an opportunity to get right back there. They say history tends to repeat itself but this is one of those where we hope it doesn’t.”
The same situation applies to several of his team-mates including Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan, but after the tumultuous nature of their year last season, they will be looking forward to working under new ownership and continuing under the guidance of Doc Rivers.
After winning 57 games last season, a franchise record, the Clippers have also won the Pacific Division two consecutive years and come into this season as one of the favourites to emerge from a competitive Western Conference.
The San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder are just two of the teams that they will have to compete with, while it remains to be seen if they can get as far as being matched with the best that the East can offer.
Nevertheless, the Clippers appear to be a more stable organisation this year after Steve Ballmer completed his takeover of the franchise, and they will be looking to fully focus their minds on matter on the court this coming year.
