Argentinian talks of “total devotion” Naples has for Maradona.
Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain is targeting the Scudetto next season, and wants to do as well as Edinson Cavani and Maradona.
The 25-year-old secured a move to Naples from Real Madrid last week, and was given a hero’s welcome at his official unveiling ahead of the friendly win over Galatasaray on Monday night.
While he is expected to take part in his first game for the club during the Emirates Cup this weekend, he has spoken of the incredible welcome he has already received, and what made him choose Napoli over the other interested clubs.
“The decision to come to Naples was thought out. I spoke with my Argentine friends who have been to Naples, and also with Pepe Reina. I’m happy to be here and I hope to reciprocate the trust they have shown in me,” he is quoted as saying by La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Argentinian international will largely be handed the responsibility of replacing Edinson Cavani next season, after the prolific striker clinched a move to Paris Saint-Germain.
While he hopes to emulate what the Uruguayan achieved at the club, he has set his sights higher and is hoping to bring another Scudetto to Naples, the first since his compatriot Maradona lit up the Italian top flight.
“Last year the team did a great job, but this year we are aiming high, we want to fight on all fronts.
“We have a great squad and a great technician. The last championship came when there was Maradona? I’ll try to win it this year, this is the goal and it would be great. This city is totally devoted to Maradona. I felt the affection of the people as soon as I set foot at the San Paolo, which is a mythical stadium,” he added.
Higuain will hope to settle into his new surroundings over the course of the next few weeks, as coach Rafa Benitez aims to mastermind a title charge to compete with the likes of Juventus and AC Milan.
