The Scot could be the influence the forward needs.
It has been a tumultuous summer for Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney, as the 27-year-old flirted with the idea of joining Premier League rivals Chelsea.
However, after the Red Devils refused to let the star attacker leave, Rooney was forced to either sulk at Old Trafford or continue to perform at the highest level.
The England international chose the latter and now the relationship the striker has with manager David Moyes could convince the player to sign a new deal with United, reports the Independent.
“It’s obviously good. He’s a great manager and thoroughly deserves this job because of what he did at Everton. It’s good to work under him and hopefully be successful together,” Rooney was quoted by the newspaper.
“I have tried to show the right attitude. I have always felt that’s a really important thing to do. That’s paying off for me on the pitch.”
The attacker is not wrong, as two goals from Rooney in the club’s Champions League opener against Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday night, helped Moyes get the 50-year-old’s career in the top tier of European football off to a winning start with a 4-2 result.
The Englishman also scored the first goal for the forward of the Premier League this season, with a well taken free-kick against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Moyes and Rooney worked together at Everton and while there was a brief blip due to the striker’s comments about the Glaswegian in an autobiography, that problem has been resolved for some time.
It’s clear that United have an extra edge when the player is in the side and it’s now up to the boss to convince him to stay.
