Khedira is back on the Portuguese manager’s radar.
Chelsea are ready to step up their pursuit of Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira as Jose Mourinho wants to linkup with the manager’s former player once again, reports Spanish daily AS.
The Blues have been interested in the Germany international before, but it was Manchester United that made a bid for the midfielder this summer.
Madrid are also open to letting Khedira leave with Xabi Alonso, Casemiro, Asier Illarramendi and Luka Modric already at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Mourinho wants to strengthen in defensive midfield, with question marks over Jon Obi Mikel and Michael Essien yet to play a match this term after returning from a loan spell with Los Blancos.
Frank Lampard and Ramires have been preferred in the role so far this season, but both stars have had to readjust to play in the position having been used to more offensive tactics.
Khedira has played 11 matches in all competitions this season including starting all of Madrid’s Champions League matches.
The 26-year-old was signed in 2010 by Mourinho for a fee of around £12m from Bundesliga side Stuttgart, arriving in the Spanish capital at the same time as national team-mate Mesut Ozil.
Since then Khedira has gone on to establish the midfielder’s place in the starting XI, but still has many critics despite having played 137 matches in all competitions for Madrid to date.
The west London club are likely to sell Mikel and quite possibly Essien in the near future, whilst youngster Marco Van Ginkel has been ruled out for the entire campaign with a cruciate ligament injury.
Therefore central midfield reinforcements are likely to be one of Mourinho’s top priorities in January.
