There could be an offer put to Eto’o despite the forward wanting to return to Mallorca.
Chelsea have struggled for form up-front this season, but Jose Mourinho has revealed that the club might offer striker Samuel Eto’o a new contract in the summer.
The 32-year-old signed from Anzhi Makhachkala in August 2013 and the Cameroon international signed a one-year deal at Stamford Bridge.
Having shown indifferent form since arriving in west London it was thought that Eto’o’s contract was unlikely to be extended – with further proof of this coming after the player admitted he wanted to return to former club Mallorca.
“My son has pressured me to finish [my career] there. My son is from Mallorca,” the forward was quoted by Sky Sports earlier in January.
“I’ll always like Barca, but I prefer Mallorca.
“I miss everything from there.”
Eto’o netted a hat-trick against Manchester United in the Blues’ last Premier League match which took the African’s tally for the season to eight goals in 21 appearances.
The attacker looks like a shadow of the ruthless player seen at Barcelona and Inter Milan, that won three Champions League trophies.
It was thought that Mourinho brought Eto’o in as a stopgap after the west London club missed out on Wayne Rooney last summer, but the 51-year-old seems to rate the Cameroonian more than most.
“We’ll see what he wants to do at the end of the season,” the Portuguese coach was quoted by the Telegraph.
“Maybe he wants to go to Mallorca, as he promised his son. Maybe he wants to stay with us, or go and finish his career at Inter [Milan]. He doesn’t need titles, he doesn’t need money.”
