It’s not all bad for the Gunners as they eye up the Frenchman.
With Real Madrid closing in on a deal for Liverpool’s Luis Suarez, suddenly the door is opening for Arsenal to bring Karim Benzema the other way, reports the Mirror.
The Gunners have admitted defeat in trying to sign the Uruguayan, but the 26-year-old’s move to the Santiago Bernabeu could actually help the north London club sign an alternative.
With Gonzalo Higuain – another previous target of Arsene Wenger’s – having left for Napoli this summer, Madrid are currently a little too light up-front to let Benzema leave for the Emirates Stadium.
However, the arrival of Suarez in the Spanish capital means new Los Blancos coach Carlo Ancelotti is much more likely to be open to the prospect of allowing the France international to leave and according to Marca, a €46m has already been submitted in preparation.
The 25-year-old has scored 89 times in 184 appearances for Madrid since a £30m move from Olympique Lyon four years ago; including a goal in the club’s opening La Liga match against Real Betis at the weekend.
Benzema has had to compete for a place in that time however and only started 19 league matches last season, along with playing second fiddle in scoring terms to superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
With Suarez and Tottenham Hotspur’s Gareth Bale also reportedly arriving at the Bernabeu, the striker may find opportunities even more limited in the coming months.
Therefore, Benzema may be open to the idea of a switch to north London, where Olivier Giroud is the only major competition for a starting place.
