It’s looking increasingly likely that the England star will stay at Old Trafford…
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will not hand in a transfer request this week to force through a move to Premier League rivals Chelsea, Sky Sports sources understand.
Following Monday nights 0-0 draw between the two teams, Jose Mourinho appeared to issue Wayne Rooney an ultimatum: tell United you no longer want to play for them, or we won’t bid.
“We are not so silly as to try to get a player from a big club, a club that doesn’t sell what they don’t want to sell; we are not so silly as to try to do something if somebody didn’t start it,” said the charismatic Portuguese boss.
“The person that started the story has to finish the story. For the good of everyone it is time to finish the story. One way or another he has to say ‘I want to leave’ or ‘I want to stay’.”
Rooney was impressive in the goalless draw at Old Trafford, and showed that he could still have a future at the league champions despite a difficult summer for both the player and the club.
This is looking increasingly probable as the striker is unlikely to hand in a transfer request in the coming week. Rooney was said to be “angry and confused” by new boss David Moyes’ comments which indicated that he only valued Rooney as a backup to Robin Van Persie, but the pair appear to have reached some sort of mutual reconciliation.
The 27-year-old striker is now expected to stay at Manchester United, while Chelsea will turn their attentions to Anzhi Makhachkala’s Cameroonian 32-year-old forward Samuel Eto’o, having already signed his Brazilian teammate Willian earlier in the week.
