RB: Sergio Ramos
The double World Cup and European Championship winner is among the most technically gifted, yet robust, defenders in world football and easily beats United’s promising but inexperienced Brazilian Rafael to the right-back spot. Ramos may be just 26, but he is one cap shy of century of appearances for Spain and has been an indispensable part of Real Madrid’s back-four since arriving from Sevilla in 2005.
LB: Fabio Coentrao
The Portuguese flyer narrowly edges out the experienced but fading Patrice Evra to the left-back position. The former Benfica loves to roam down the left flank and has a sweet left-foot.
CB: Raphael Varane
Quickly establishing himself as one of the finest centre-halves in Europe. It’s crazy to think Varana is still just 19. The young Frenchman will be boosted from scoring in both legs of Real’s Copa del Rey semi-final against Barcelona last month and the 6’3″ youngster has all the attributes to make it to the very top.
CB: Jonny Evans
Not the most glamorous name on this list but the Northern Irishman has quietly established himself as United’s first-choice centre-half, and pips teammates Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, plus Pepe, to a spot in our team. With Ronaldo deadly from range, Evans will have to stay on his feet and avoid silly fouls but his composure and passing from the back could be key for the Red Devils.
