The Red Devils have not given up hope of signing their former talisman.
Arguably the greatest Manchester United player of the Premier League era, Cristiano Ronaldo, is still a target for the club and the English champions have set aside £80m to pay Real Madrid, according to the Daily Mail.
United sold Ronaldo to Los Blancos in the summer of 2009 for the same price, with the Portuguese forward becoming the most expensive player of all time – a title held until Madrid paid £85.3m for Tottenham Hotspur’s Gareth Bale this summer.
Ronaldo spent six years at Old Trafford previously, going on to become the club’s most important star and guiding the side to Champions League victory in 2008.
The 28-year-old established an extremely special relationship with the Red Devils and likened former manager Sir Alex Ferguson as a father figure.
Ferguson’s departure just before the end of last season is thought to have made the attacker reconsider rejoining United – coupled with the fact that Los Merengues offered the Portugal captain a new €12m-a-year contract, making Ronaldo the highest paid player on the planet.
Yet things aren’t all rosy at the Santiago Bernabeu either, where the arrival of Bale is seen by many to undermine the position of the club’s top-scorer and also led to the departure of Mesut Ozil.
The German’s sale to Arsenal did not sit well with Ronaldo, who had established a great relationship with Ozil both on and off the pitch and the winger is weighing up the options.
After a chaotic transfer window that saw new United chief executive Ed Woodward come under serious criticism, the signing of the former superstar would help put this difficult summer behind the new hierarchy.
