The Red Devils could still hold onto their star forward.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has admitted that the club have other options if they fail to sign first choice target Wayne Rooney of Manchester United.
The Portuguese boss told a press conference ahead of the Premier League clash with Aston Villa on Wednesday that Rooney is not the only possibility.
“We have a plan B and a plan C,” Mourinho told journalists when asked what the Blues would do if they can’t sign the United man.
“I cannot give you names though as that makes things very difficult.”
This development could give some hope to United fans who are hoping the Red Devils manage to keep hold of Rooney this summer, despite the 27-year-old wanting to leave.
The English champions have said they do not want to sell the forward, but if the England international is truly desperate for a move away from Old Trafford then their hand may be forced.
Mourinho has kept an eye on other strikers in case Rooney does not make the switch, with former player at Inter Milan Samuel Eto’o the most likely option.
The Cameroonian won the treble under the 50-year-old at the San Siro in 2010 and has recently been transfer-listed by current club Anzhi Makhachkala.
Whatever happens it’s almost certain that the Rooney saga will carry right on up until deadline day on September 2.
