Thiago Alcantara closing in on Old Trafford switch.
Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara has a “good chance” of joining Manchester United in a £17m deal this week, according to the Guardian.
The 22-year-old is set to sign a five-year contract at Old Trafford and will significantly increase his currently £30,000-a-week wage packet.
The playmaker will be David Moyes first major signing at United but is unlikely to join before the club depart on their three-week pre-season tour of Asia and Australia on Wednesday.
The Red Devils appeared to have lost out on Thiago after the La Liga champions offered the Spain international assurances he would receive regular game-time next season.
But sources close to the player now say the chances of him joining United are greatly enhanced.
The Spaniard captained his country to under-21 European Championship glory last month and illustrated his prodigious talents with a hattrick in the 4-2 win over Italy in the final.
New United boss Moyes has been searching for a worthy successor to Paul Scholes, who retired this summer after over 20 years at Old Trafford.
