The Red Devils are clutching at straws after the Everton man also looks like staying.
Everton could be about to pile more misery on Manchester United and the Premier League champions’ quest for a new midfielder, as the Marouane Fellaini deal falls through.

United already looked to have missed out on Athletic Bilbao star Ander Herrera following disagreements on the player’s €36m release clause and now the Toffees want to hold onto Fellaini.
The 25-year-old is said to have handed a transfer request in at Goodison Park to try and force a reunion with manager David Moyes at Old Trafford, but the Merseyside club will not budge until they have found a replacement.
James McCarthy of Wigan Athletic looks like the most likely candidate, but until boss Roberto Martinez can agree a fee with former chairman Dave Whelan, this deal will go nowhere.
It’s becoming a carefully planned arrangement and with time running out until the window closes, the Red Devils face missing out on Fellaini.
United were prepared to pay somewhere in the region of £25m for the Belgium international, as Moyes looks to improve the midfield at the Theatre of Dreams.
The English champions have struggled in the middle of the park this term due to the retirement of Paul Scholes, but have already missed out on Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas and could be set to do the same with both Herrera and Fellaini.
