The England international has been used in an unfamiliar midfield position instead of upfront this season, with many suggesting his talent is being wasted in a deeper role.
Still, van Gaal insists Rooney is happy to play there, saying he should inform him if he feels otherwise.
“He’s happy – otherwise he should come to me and say he’s not happy,” the Dutchman said.
“He never does. He’s always friendly to me. He wants to perform what I want – so that’s what I see.
“Of course, when the whole world is writing he has to be in the striker’s position, he will be thinking ‘maybe, hey’. He’s human.”
