The Red Devils can move a massive ten points clear of Premier League champions and arch-rivals Manchester City in second place with a win at Fulham in the early evening kick-off on Saturday, before their city rivals entertain Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.
However, the Scot is worried that the club’s “sadistic” tendencies will allow City back into the title race.
“It must be hard for our fans,” said Ferguson. “It’s the sadistic nature of our team.
“It was poor from us, against Southampton. We should have been 5-0 up at half-time.
“That’s happened a few times this season. We’ve been in comfortable positions but haven’t dug our nails into it.
“It’s frustrating, because I know we’re capable of doing that. It could go to down goal difference again and that’s an issue.
“At the moment we’re only two goals better off than Manchester City. That could be undone in just one game and we’ve had opportunities to be better.
“It’s very tempting to think about being 10 points clear but the most important thing is to keep our feet on the ground and try to win our game at Fulham.
“Then we’ll see where that takes us.”
