It’s the biggest match of Manchester City’s Champions League campaign, as European champions Bayern Munich are the team coming to the Etihad Stadium.
City are hoping it’s third time lucky this year having failed to make it out of their group for the past two seasons – with Bayern one of their opponents at this stage in 2011/12 as well.
The Citizens actually beat the Germans in this fixture then, but the result was futile in the end as previous defeats – including at the Allianz Arena – relegated the English side to the Europa League.
Roberto Mancini and Carlos Tevez of course had their infamous bust-up when the Argentine refused to come off the bench against Bayern, but neither man is at the Etihad any more and there is renewed confidence this time around.
This is partly because Champions League expert Manuel Pellegrini is now in charge – a coach who has led Villarreal to the semi-finals and Malaga to the quarters, against the odds in this competition.
Pep Guardiola’s side are in a whole different class however, winning the treble of Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League last year and having bought in Mario Goetze and Thiago Alcantara since.
Bayern have midfield injuries though and full-back Philipp Lahm has been utilised in the middle of the park, whereas City welcome back Sergio Aguero and David Silva after fitness concerns.
