De Gea could have played his last game for the Red Devils after suffering an injury during United’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The 24-year-old has one year remaining on his contract at the Premier League giants and holds the bargaining power as United run the risk of losing the Spanish international for free at the end of next season.
It is believed United have offered the goalkeeper a mega £200k-a-week deal, but his Spanish girlfriend is reportedly wanting a move back to their homeland.
Van Gaal admitted that losing de Gea was very real possibility, but added that nor he or the club would allow him to leave too easily.
“With every individual transfer it is a process, and it is a process for David De Gea,” Van Gaal is quoted as saying by The Mirror.
“He shall not leave us so easily, because we have a great club. But, of course, he is Spanish, his girlfriend is Spanish, he can go to another great club and that is for him to decide.
“He has to decide, because we have given a fantastic contract because we want him to stay.
“He is a Spanish international, still behind Iker Casillas, now a Spanish club is coming [in for him], his girlfriend is Spanish, his father and mother come every week or every two weeks here, so it’s difficult.”
De Gea suffered a hamstring injury on Sunday and was forced from the field with 15 minutes remaining.
