European giants to go head-to-head for Toffees talent.
Man United & Bayern Munich will battle it out to sign Everton full-back Leighton Baines, according to the Daily Star
The set-piece specialist is reportedly being lined up as a successor to France international Patrice Evra at Old Trafford.
Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to sign Baines in the summer but baulked at Everton’s £20m asking-price and decided to spend the cash on Robin van Persie, a decision that has clearly proved wise.
But the Scot remains interested in Baines, 27, who has two years remaining on his current deal at Goodison Park.
The England international has been on fine form for the high-flying Toffees this season, starting every one of Everton’s 22 league games and chipping in with three goals.
But Bayern Munich, who targeted Baines in the summer, remain keen to lure the former Wigan left-back to the Bundesliga.
The Germans currently use young Austrian talent David Alaba as their first choice left-back but regard Baines as a more complete performer.
Everton are hopeful of holding onto Baines if they can finish fourth and secure Champions League football for next season but boss David Moyes realistically knows that the player will have to be sold in the summer if the club receives a huge bid.
Baines is understood to be reluctant to move abroad and would prefer to remain close to his Merseyside home, which makes United clear favourites for his signature.
