Suarez set for deeper role against United on his return…
Liverpool predicted lineup v Manchester United in the League Cup:
Defence:
Brendan Rodgers started four centre-halves against Southampton at the weekend, and badly paid the price. The team lacked width and penetration with slow, unadventurous fullbacks on the pitch, and the Northern Irish boss won’t make the same mistake again. Jose Enrique should start at left-back, while England Under-21 skipper Andre Wisdom will be given another chance at right-back.
In goal, Simon Mignolet should play after his ultra-impressive start to the season since arriving at Anfield. With Liverpool not playing in Europe, expect Rodgers to put out a very strong team, and backup keeper Brad Jones will likely stay on the bench.
Sakho will continue his fledgling Liverpool career alongside the revitalised Martin Skrtel, while Daniel Agger will not be risked ahead of next weekend’s league match with Sunderland.
Midfield:
Expect Rodgers to stick with the same midfield trio he has all season, with Steven Gerrard and Lucas anchoring the more dynamic Jordan Henderson. Henderson will roam forward, and cover defensively down the right-hand side, while Gerrard will help cover the left-hand side of the pitch. Joe Allen could also be involved at some point, with a view to resting either Lucas or Gerrard for the weekend.
Attack:
Up top, the goal hungry Daniel Sturridge will continue spearheading the side in a no.9 role. The Englishman has scored five goals already this term, and will be eager to reform a blossoming partnership with Luis Suarez, who will return from suspension this evening. The Uruguayan should play in a deeper role from the left, but he will have the freedom to join Sturridge up top, or drift infield into a no.10 position where he can dictate play and slide his strike partner through on goal.
Out on the right, England international Raheem Sterling should be given another chance to impress after scoring in the last round against Notts County. Sterling provides width and pace down the right, and will be a dangerous outlet for the Reds on the counter attack.
