Gerrard understands Suarez wants to play Champions League football – but not with Arsenal…
Liverpool and England skipper Steven Gerrard has begged his club controversial club teammate Luis Suarez to give the Reds one more year, before leaving to join an elite European club next summer, reports the Mirror.
Suarez was the subject of intense transfer speculation all summer, with Liverpool’s Premier League rivals Arsenal having two bids rejected, with the second offer of £40m plus £1 angering Liverpool’s hierarchy greatly.
As a result, Liverpool claimed they would refuse to sell the 26-year-old Uruguayan, and have stayed true to their word, despite some damming comments from player about the club in the media.
With the transfer window set to close on Monday evening, it appears that Suarez, who is still serving a ten game suspension for biting Branislav Ivanovic last season, will be staying at Anfield.
Hi captain Gerrard understands the player’s frustrations at not playing Champions League football, but doesn’t believe a move to Arsenal would be a career improvement.
“I didn’t ever think Luis would leave – well, not to another English club anyway,” said the 33-year-old midfielder.
“I don’t want to disrespect Arsenal, because they are a fantastic club, but I don’t see joining them as being a step forward for Luis.
Gerrard reckons that if Suarez can give Liverpool one more year of quality of service, no fan would begrudge him joining one of the best clubs in Europe – such as Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich.
“There are only really two or three clubs he should leave this football club for if he is taking a step forward,” he continued.
“If we don’t qualify for the Champions League this season he can go to Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich – and he can go with his head held high.
“The one thing I can assure you, it’s not about money with Luis Suarez.”
