Markovic felt he wouldn’t get playing time at Stamford Bridge.Liverpool’s new signing Lazar Markovic could have joined Chelsea instead of the Merseyside giants, according to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo.
101 Great Goals shows a screen shot of the print edition of the publication, which states that the Blues had an option on the player to sign him for around £12m, but he favoured instead to move to Anfield as he felt it would give him more chances of first-team football.
While a move for Markovic to join Liverpool is yet to be officially confirmed, it is widely expected that he will be announced as their new signing in the next couple of days after completing a medical with the club.
The 20-year-old is rated as one of the most promising young players in Europe and could be a great coup by Liverpool, particularly if they do land him at the expense of one of their major Premier League rivals.
The Serbian international only joined Benfica last summer, but is already on the move to a bigger club after an impressive debut campaign in Portugal, in which he helped Jorge Jesus’ side to the title.
