Liverpool prodigy Raheem Sterling, who was awarded Man of the Match in England’s latest friendly against Denmark, has lauded the role of his captain in his development, reports the Daily Star.
Steven Gerrard skippers the 19-year-old for both club and country, and has, according to the young winger, been instrumental in his rise.
“I couldn’t ask for a better captain,” said the wonderkid, who’s scored six and assisted three goals this term in the Premier league.
“Before every game he is helping me in terms of what player I am up against, and to have someone like that to encourage you is great.”
Sterling’s pace and dribbling is incredible, but his game intelligence and ability to link up with his fellow teammates is improving game by game.
As a result, he’s emerged as the favourite to replace Theo Walcott in the England starting XI at the World Cup.
Despite his meteoric rise, Sterling still admits to getting nervous at training alongside Anfield’s superstars.
“When you are training with Gerrard and [Luis] Suarez it is a bit nerve-wracking but after a while you get used to it and you start being yourself and start expressing yourself,” he said.
With nine Premier League fixtures remaining, the teenager is expected to play a key role in liverpool’s title run in.
