Liverpool go into their home game against Newcastle United this Monday knowing that a win would take them to within four points of the final Champions League spot, upping the pressure on faltering Manchester City. Newcastle, on the other hand, will be eyeing a morale boosting victory following their fifth consecutive Tyne-Wear derby loss against Sunderland to end worries of being dragged into an end of season relegation dogfight.
The Reds have lost their last two games against Manchester United and Arsenal, but still harbour hopes of finishing in the Premier League’s top four and securing another season in the Champions League. Should Brendan Rodgers and his team make the top four it will be thanks to the demise of the current champions, following their dismal 4-2 loss at Old Trafford in the Manchester derby.
There has not been a goalless draw in this fixture in 41 years, though the Magpies have not won a league game at Anfield in 21 years.
Liverpool will be boosted by the return of youngster Jordan Ibe following six weeks on the sidelines along with Emre Can, Martin Skrtel and Steven Gerrard all returning from suspension. Despite this Mario Balotelli and Adam Lallana are likely to miss out with illness and a groin injury respectively.
Newcastle should be able to name Daryl Janmaat in their side, despite a calf injury, but neither Siem de Jong or Rolando Aarons will play any part despite returning to training after lengthy spells on the sidelines.
