The Reds are also reportedly close to signing FC Basel winger Mohamed Salah, so it’s clear the manager sees strengthening the final third as an absolute priority.
The 22-year-old flyer is highly rated at the Nou Camp, but obviously struggles for game time with the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Neymar, Francesc Fabregas and Pedro all capable of playing in one of the wide attacking spots.
As a a result, Tello has only been given two La Liga starts this term, and eight appearances from the bench, where he has so far assisted two goals.
Liverpool are in desperate need of attacking reinforcements, and a short-term deal for Tello seems the perfect solution. Against Chelsea on Sunday, Brendan Rodgers had to bring on 19-year-old Australian Brad Smith to make his debut when Joe Allen limped off with an injury.
Smith was selected over Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto, which showed Liverpool fans just how much their manager rates the out of form summer signings.
Liverpool have only Raheem Sterling and Chelsea loanee Victor Moses as genuine wide options, so the acquisition of Tello will give the manager more options in the final third.
Tello prefers to play from the left, where he can cut in on his right foot and shoot on goal. This will enable Coutinho to play his favoured central no.10 role, with Sterling continuing from the right-wing.
