Liverpool bring defender on trial to Anfield.
Liverpool are close to completing the signing of Norwegian defender Vegard Forren from Molde, according to Norwegian television station TV2, initially on a trial basis.
“Molde has accepted a bid from Premier League club Liverpool,” claimed a report on the station earlier this evening, but it is believed that Liverpool want to look at the 24 year-old before committing to buy.
“The 24-year old is travelling to England on Tuesday to undertake a medical.”
The surprise deal will give the Reds cover at the back, with the ageing Jamie Carragher currently possessing the turning circle the size of the moon’s orbit and Sebastian Coates likely to seek regular football on loan.
Still, Forren could in fact be ready to play first team football somewhat earlier than might be expected, as his progression under former Manchester United striker .
Norwegian football expert Brendan Husebo told the Daily Mirror that Liverpool would get a very fine player indeed – if he signed after a successful trial.
“Forren was by far and away the best player in the Norwegian Premier League last year. But what made a big move inevitable was the way he extended that to internationals and the Europa League.
“After looking like lost potential, Forren has become calmness personified under Ole Gunnar Solskjær.
“A skilful, strong, left-footed centre back might sound familiar to Liverpool fans, and comparisons to Daniel Agger in terms of style and potential are wholly justifiable.”
First choice defenders at Anfield Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger are selected for nearly every fixture in the Premier League and FA Cup, and will require rest at some points.
Could Forren be the man to stand in when required, or is a current Liverpool player such as Martin Kelly or Sebastian Coates closer to taking the third centre back slot?
