Toure injury caps off awkward evening for the Reds…
Liverpool have three days to sign a replacement centre-half, as veteran defender Kolo Toure suffered what looks to be a nasty groin injury in the Reds’ 4-2 win over Notts County in the League Cup at Anfield.
Toure has earned rave reviews since signing from Manchester City on a free transfer earlier this summer – helping Liverpool to two clean sheets and two wins in their first two Premier League outings.
The groin injury he picked up in extra-time time tonight will be a cruel blow to both the player and the club.
Liverpool were cruising at Anfield on Tuesday evening, 2-0 up at half-time thanks to goals from Raheem Sterling and the blistering hot Daniel Sturridge.
A lack of concentration and failure to put the game to bed meant the League One visitors stunned the Reds and levelled the match – with Liverpool only managing to wrap a win in extra-time thanks to another from Sturridge and a final goal from Jordan Henderson.
With Liverpool taking on Manchester United at Anfield on Saturday – Daniel Agger is the only fit senior centre-half at the club, with Sebastian Coates and Martin Skrtel also injured.
Manager Brendan Rodgers will be desperate to bring in an immediate replacement, with Portuguese youngster Tiago Ilori and French stopper Mamadou Sakho being lined up to partner Liverpool’s Danish centre-half at the back.
