Athletic Bilbao defender on Anfield radar.
Liverpool are believed to be monitoring teenage Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte, who has impressed for the La Liga club despite his tender years.
Just 18 years of age, Aymeric has shone in the UEFA Europa League.
In his three appearances so far, Athletic Bilbao have yet to concede a goal – though only two of the three were starts.
A cultured centre half, Aymeric is happy with the ball at his feet, and a confident passer.
Of course, his top priority is defending, and the France youth international has excelled there too, proving himself a clean tackler and showing a positioning sense beyond his years.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has relied on the partnership of Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger in central defence, with Jamie Carragher and Sebastian Coates backup.
Carragher is advancing in years though, and soon his turning circle will circumnavigate the earth.
With that in mind, Aymeric will represent a sensible option.
Liverpool will have to move quickly though – Aymeric’s contract runs until 2014, with a release clause of €3 million.
Recent reports suggest that he is close to extending that to 2016, with the buyout clause increased to €18m.
