Liverpool badly need to bring in a winger – and will almost definitely sign Moses before September…
Liverpool are closing in on a deal to sign Chelsea’s 22-year-old Nigerian powerhouse wing-forward Victor Moses, reports the Liverpool Echo.
The Reds are worryingly thin in wide areas, having loaned Oassama Assaidi to Stoke City, and sold Stewart Downing to West Ham this summer. If you regard Iago Aspas as a forward option – Liverpool only have Coutinho as an established wide player- with English teenagers Raheem Sterling and Jordon Ibe as backup.
For a club aiming to challenge for the top four, this is nowhere near strong enough.
Chelsea on the other hand, have the opposite problem , and have a wealth of talent to choose from that will undoubtedly affect squad harmony. Having signed Willian from Anzhi Makhachkala, the Blues are closing in on Porto’s Christian Atsu, having already got Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, Oscar, Kevin De Bruyne and Andre Schurrle capable of playing in the attacking midfield positions.
Moses then, is surplus to requirements – and is expected to sign for the Reds in the coming days on a season long loan.
The England youth international bagged ten in all competitions for Chelsea last term – but was not given much Premier League game time. With Liverpool’s thin squad, he would hope to establish himself as a first-team regular on the right of a front three at Anfield – supporting Sturridge and Suarez, with Coutinho playing in the hole behind.
Business between Liverpool and Chelsea has hugely favoured the Merseyside club in recent years – with Fernando Torres and Raul Meireles flopping at Stamford Bridge, but Daniel Sturridge flourishing in a striker role, and doubling his value at Anfield.
Whether the Blues live to regret the imminent Moses deal remains to be seen, but the Nigerian will simply not get the chances his ability deserves at Chelsea this year.
