Whereas Coutinho is beautiful to watch, Aspas is less pleasant on the eye, according to Brendan Rodgers…
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has given new signing Iago Aspas a backhanded compliment, but raved about Coutinho, in an interview he gave to the club’s official website.
The Northern Irish boss was talking about his new signings, after his side’s impressive pre-season continued with a 3-0 victory against a Thailand XI yesterday.
While he admits that Aspas isn’t the most graceful player to watch, he thinks the attacker, who cost £7.5m from Celta Vigo earlier in the transfer window, will be extremely effective for the Reds this season.
“The idea was that Aspas would give us another dimension up there and he’s done that. He’s a very effective player. Sometimes he’s not always easy on the eye but when you actually monitor how efficient he is – he creates goals and scores goals,” said Rodgers.
“It was a lovely touch into space by him for his goal and he finished really well. Then he showed good vision to set up Stevie, who finished magnificently.”
Aspas has scored three goals already this summer, as has Brazilian youngster Coutinho, who has been the undoubted star player of pre-season.
“Coutinho had me up off my seat. He’s a player you would pay money to watch. He’s just a delight on the ball,” Rodgers added, in light of the playmaker’s wondergoal yesterday.
Liverpool fans will be excited about seeing the two link up this year, and here’s how the side could start on the first day of the Premier League against Stoke City on August 18 (if they hold on to Luis Suarez):
