Sturridge deserves to play alongside world-class players, says Rodgers…
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers reckons his star striker Daniel Sturridge finally knows how good he is, reports the Mirror.
Sturridge has bagged six goals already this season, including three winners in the opening three Premier League matches, helping Liverpool climb to second place in the table.
“First of all, he definitely deserves to be playing alongside those world class talents like Gerrard and Suarez – there is no question about that,” the Liverpool manager insisted.
“He’s a top player, and, yeah, without him being arrogant, I think he knows he’s a good player now. He’s 24 and he is finally getting the chance now to show consistently that he’s a top player,” Rodgers added.
Since his arrival from Chelsea last January, the England forward has scored 18 goals in 21 appearances, and will likely start up top for England in their crucial World Cup qualifiers later in the month.
Rodgers thinks that the striker has finally started to develop his prodigal talent at Liverpool, and thinks his no.9 will continue to flourish at Anfield.
“Everyone, from when he was 14, could see his natural talent. I was involved in youth football back then, and at that age he was the best number nine in European football,” Rodgers continued.
“He was coveted throughout Europe, but just never had the chance to show that ability, perhaps never had the circumstances.
“All he needed was a chance to play, and the confidence that everyone believed in in him, which is what he’s got at Liverpool.”
Sturridge will start up front alongside Luis Suarez at home to Crystal Palace this afternoon, and if the Reds win they will go to the top of the table with Arsenal playing on Sunday.
