Vice-President confirms match-fixing rumours.
The Vice-President of the Spanish Professional Football League has shocked many in the footballing world by confirming rumours of match-fixing allegations, according to Marca.
Speaking on Spanish Radio, Javier Tebas revealed ‘Matches have been fixed. We’re working hard to expose cheats. What happened in Italy can just as well happen in Spain.’
Tebas confirmed that on-going investigations are occurring in an attempt to bring the cheats to justice in an attempt to close the scandal down before it escalates into the kind of proportions that saw Italian giants Juventus relegated from Serie A and stripped of their titles in 2006.
Fans of Spanish football will be shocked at the prospect of many of their club’s games having their true result deliberately altered.
The Spanish league is widely considered to be one of the best in the world, and is one of the few leagues able to compete for global coverage with the Premier League.
Its popularity has risen in recent years with the continued success of Lionel Messi’s Barcelona and the arrival of a number of the world’s best players at Real Madrid.
It remains unclear exactly which fixtures are said to have been fixed.
