Reds should have snapped up Vertonghen when they had the chance…
Liverpool’s legendary midfielder Jan Molby has lambasted his former club for not signing Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen from Ajax last summer, he told 5 times, a Liverpool based podcast.
Instead, Brendan Rodgers persuaded Jamie Carragher to play on for another season, and Liverpool didn’t sign anyone to play in central defence – which arguably left the squad short.
“The one thing we missed is Jan Vertonghen last year. Why did we allow him to go to Spurs? That’s a no-brainer,” said Molby, who won three league titles and three FA Cups for Liverpool in the 1980s.
Vertonghen instead moved to Tottenham for a fee around £9m, and has been a revelation ever since, establishing himself as one of the best defenders in the country, and probably tripling his value.
Last summer, the 26-year-old was linked with the Reds before his move to White Harte Lane, and appeared to be interested in a potential move.
“I can’t say anything about whether there has been contact (with Liverpool) about a transfer but it’s flattering to be linked. The rumours give me confidence, but I just try to do my best every game,” he said.
This summer, Liverpool have brought in Kolo Toure to play central defence on a free transfer, who to be fair – has been fantastic in the opening two games of the Premier League season. The 32-year-old is not a long term solution though, and Reds fans will hope Brendan Rodgers doesn’t miss out on any potential bargains before the end of the month – with Ajax’s Toby Alderwiereld and Schalke’s Kyriakos Papadopoulos on Liverpool’s radar.
