In what is a taste of what is to come, Australia will take on India in a one-off Twenty20 match at Rajot to start their short and sharp tour.
While it might be the start of India’s domestic international season for 2013-14, they play the first limited over game in Rajkot against an Australia team looking for continuity.
However, with eight one-day internationals around the corner it has to be asked how seriously today’s game will be treated other than an glorified net session.
It is India’s first Twenty20 game since December 2012 in what is a long time off for the side, and their ability to settle and bat and bowl in partnerships being crucial to their cause.
Members of their side have been playing in one form or another over the past months with eight in the Champions Trophy side, while some have been getting their game-time in on tours and in the IPL.
Shane Watson, Aaron Finch, Glenn Maxwell and James Faulkner all loom as important players for the Australians, not just for their roles in the team. but also for their recent games in Indian conditions.
They will need to help guide and steady their side who have been woeful in recent Twenty20 internationals, losing six of their past seven, with a win vital for morale ahead of a tough tour.
