The great Scot says that one piece of silverware would be a great achievement.
Manchester United’s 1-1 draw at home to Southampton on Saturday means David Moyes has now won just three of their opening eight Premier League matches this season.
Defeats to Liverpool, Manchester City and West Bromwich Albion leaves the English champions eight points adrift of leaders Arsenal, even at this early stage of the campaign.
It is probably not the start Moyes dreamed of when taking over the the great Sir Alex Ferguson this summer, but the 50-year-old’s predecessor has leapt to the new boss’ defence.
“For David, winning a trophy would be a fantastic achievement,” Ferguson was quoted by ITV.
“No matter what it is – the League Cup, FA Cup, European Cup or Premier League.
“We’ve always had priorities obviously and David is aware of that but I hope he achieves it.
“There are absolutely no issues about it. Every club needs a little bit of luck and hopefully we’ll get the luck.”
Some may have been a little harsh on Moyes so far, as although the Red Devils’ league form has been nothing but average, they have been solid in both the Champions League and League Cup.
A win over Bayer Leverkusen and a point from a potentially tricky tie in Ukraine against Shakhtar Donetsk, is a good start to the European campaign.
Meanwhile knocking the Reds out of the League Cup – despite fielding a second string side – will certainly please the faithful at Old Trafford.
However, with five other sides looking strong in the English top tier, finishing in the places for next year’s Champions League could prove tricky.
