Welshman met Mancini in Rome three years ago to discuss vacant role.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers very nearly became Roberto Mancini’s assistant coach at Manchester City, the Italian has revealed.
fanatix tickets – Barclays Premier League tickets are still available for this weekend’s games.
Manchester City vs Liverpool tickets are on sale from £29 for this Sunday’s match at the Etihad Stadium.
The two clubs meet in the Premier League at Eastlands this Sunday afternoon, where Mancini will be assisted in the City dug-out by David Platt, while Rodgers will be directing operations from the Reds bench.
However, it could have been so different after the pair met in the summer of 2010 in Rome to discuss the Welshman becoming Mancini’s right-hand man.
“Before David, I talked with Brendan,” said Mancini. “But for me it was easier to take David because I played with him, I knew him very well and David spoke Italian.
“I was impressed with Brendan. I met him in Milan. I spoke about him with our chief scout [former technical director Mike Rigg] and also with Garry Cook [former City chief executive].
“He impressed me because he knows his football very well, he showed he is a good manager in the last two years.
“I’m not surprised he went to Liverpool, because he’s a good manager.”
