Holtby, 22, signed a pre-contract agreement with the North London outfit earlier this month and was initially set to join on a free transfer in the summer.
But, following an injury to midfielder Sandro and with the Bundesliga club eager to do a deal early, Spurs decided to bring the move forward and have reportedly agreed a fee of around €1.5m with Schalke.
Holtby is reportedly having a medical at White Hart Lane and is likely to complete his move in the next 48 hours. The player could sign in time to make his debut against Leeds in Sunday’s FA Cup clash at Elland Road.
The Germany under-21 captain, who has two caps for Joachim Loew’s senior side, has been with Schalke since 2009 but only broke into the first-team last season.
The playmaker, who has an English father and German mother, has impressed in the Champions League this term, helping Schalke to finish above Spurs’ North London rivals Arsenal.
The Gunners and Liverpool were both thought to be keen on the technical midfielder but he opted for Tottenham, claiming boss Andre Villas-Boas was an ‘insanely good’ manager.
