George Groves makes his highly anticipated return to the ring at Wembley Arena on Saturday night as he takes on European champion Christopher Rebrasse.
Following on from his defeat to Carl Froch in their rematch at Wembley back in May, Groves will be looking to bounce back in style against his French opponent.
The added incentive for both fighters is that the winner will become the mandatory challenger for Anthony Dirrell’s WBC super-middleweight title, despite the American’s protests against Groves and how he believes he doesn’t deserve a shot after two losses.
Nevertheless, the 26-year-old has been in confident mood in the build-up to Saturday’s fight, and although victory would hand him both the European belt and the vacant WBC silver super middleweight title, he will undoubtedly be targeting bigger prizes.
His opponent, Rebrasse (22-2-3, 6 KO), has a reputation of being a tough, organised fighter but despite his claims that he will stop Groves, there are doubts over whether he has the power to do so.
The Londoner is the better fighter technically with his speed and boxing skills, whether on the front or back foot, and as a result, he is widely expected to come through the test unscathed.
However, there is a ‘fear factor’ involved in this bout. Groves returns to Wembley, albeit the arena as opposed to the stadium, for his first fight since being knocked out by Froch. Given the importance of this fight with many insisting it is must-win, it remains to be seen whether or not there are any early nerves in the opening rounds.
While Groves will have prepared diligently and is naturally a confident individual, there is plenty on the line on Saturday night and he will know that another defeat could permanently derail his plans of becoming a world champion.
Coverage starts on Sky Sports 2 at 20:00.
