PSG edge ahead in the race for Cavani’s signature.
Having already tabled a £50m offer for Napoli striker Edison Cavani, Paris Saint-Germain now look favourites to sign the player also targeted by Real Madrid and Chelsea, reports the Guardian.
The Cavani pursuit has taken several twists and turns with club president in Naples Aurelio De Laurentiis insisting the Uruguayan’s £54m release clause must be met for an offer to go through.
This lofty fee put Manchester City out of the running early on, whilst both Madrid and the Blues tested De Laurentiis to see if he would lower the offer.
However, suddenly PSG have jumped the queue and now look odds-on to land the 26-year-old as the Ligue 1 champions aim to show their intent, having been demoralised by manager Carlo Ancelotti’s departure for the Santiago Bernabeu.
Therefore snapping up Cavani ahead of the Italian would be all the more sweet and with the forward’s agent Pierpaolo Triulzi having met with Leonardo – the French champions’ technical director – on Monday, suddenly the power seems to have shifted.
Relations between PSG and Napoli are also said to be very good following the transfer of Argentina winger Ezequiel Lavezzi to the Parc de Princes last year.
The Cavani affair is set to become very interesting with all three interested clubs having the spending power and the desire to sign the striker – with De Laurentiis seemingly holding all the cards.
Newly reelected Los Blancos president Florentino Perez wants a marquee signing with the pursuit of Tottenham’s Gareth Bale showing no signs of fruition, whilst returning Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is extremely keen to bring a top-class striker to Stamford Bridge.
