Carlton Cole is close to joining the famous French club…
Former West Ham forward Carlton Cole is discussing personal terms with St Etienne ahead of a move to the French club, according to Sky Sports.
The ex-England striker is available on a free transfer from West Ham, after the Irons decided against renewing his contract. The player is said to be excited about the prospect of playing Europa League football with St Etienne this season.
Cole fell down the pecking order at West Ham due to Andy Carroll’s good form last term, and with the Hammers shelling out £15m to make the England man’s move to Upton Park permanent, playing time would have been difficult to come by for Cole this season.
The 29-year-old has spent seven years with the Hammers, but has only scored 47 league goals during that stint. The seven-cap England international had a particular barren season in 2012/13, only scoring two league goals in 22 appearances.
Cole will be hoping his move to France revitalises his career.
Meanwhile at West Ham, David Sulivan recently admitted that he is looking to purchase another forward this summer to complement Andy Carroll.
A move for Duvan Zapata collapsed due to work-permit issues, so no doubt more strikers will be linked to the club before the start of the new season.
